Welcome to the course


Welcome to the Totally ADR Ltd Diploma in McKenzie Friend Practice. This program is designed for those with or without legal training and is to assist you in working with us at Totally ADR Ltd as a Professional McKenzie Friend. When studying with us we aim to provide you with a wealth of knowledge to be able to assist you as an Associate McKenzie Friend with Totally ADR Ltd.


Our course is provided to you over 12 modules with each module having a multiple choice examination as well as a written essay plus practical assignments. Upon completion of all modules you will be an officially accredited Totally ADR Legal Consultant to the rank of an Associate and can start with our expert guidance assisting Litigants as a Professional McKenzie Friend.

Purpose Of This Introduction

Course Details

What will I be studying?

Within this course, you will study the following subjects

⦁    English Legal System
⦁    Child Arrangement Orders 
⦁    Drafting Documents 
⦁    Going to Court over Children Act Matters 
⦁    Domestic Abuse in Family Law 
⦁    Divorce & Financial Remedy
⦁    Contested Hearings 
⦁    Client Management  
⦁    Working as a Family Law Consultant

All units are assessed as part of your course and will accumulate points towards your final grade. 

How am I marked and assessed?

You will be marked to the following system

⦁    Pass - C - 65%
⦁    Merit - B - 75%
⦁    Distinction - A - 85%
⦁    Distinction* - A* - 95%

What happens if I fail an exam?

You are eligible for 1 retake of an exam you have failed per unit. If you fail on your retake an additional fee of £25.00 will need to be paid for future retakes. If after three attempts you have been unsuccessful, you will be required to do retraining for that particular unit.

What qualification will I achieve?

Upon completion, you will receive a Totally ADR Ltd accredited Diploma in McKenzie Friend Studies and membership to Totally ADR Ltd to the rank of an Associate.

How can I expand my knowledge and practice?

Our programs are designed to take you from being a Diploma in McKenzie Friend Studies We aim to train all our McKenzie Friends from the foundation up regardless of their qualifications or past experience. However, if a McKenzie Friend is thriving we may aim to upgrade their training to advance them more quickly. 

Our aim is to train all our McKenzie Friends to have in-depth knowledge of Family Law, Small Claims, Child Maintenance and Mediation to be able to develop their own practice whilst being regulated, assisted and trained by us. 

Our memberships are to assist members of the public and you in providing Legal Consultancy services and to ensure you are able to provide services you fully understand.

Who will be teaching me?

You will have two tutors on your course.

Mr. Craig Johnson LLB (Hons)  is the CEO of Totally ADR Ltd and also a Senior Legal Consultant with over 5 years experience in Family Law, Child Maintenance Tribunal Advocacy, Small Claims Advocacy, and Civil & Commercial Mediation. 

Ms. Julie Blackmer ExeDipMed, DipPL is the Senior Executive of Totally ADR Ltd and is a Qualified Legal Consultant with over 2 years of experience in Family Law, Mediation and Civil Litigation. 


The course runs over 5 days from Monday - Friday. Our morning sessions are 9am - 12:30pm and afternoon sessions are 1:30pm - 5pm. Regular breaks are given as needed.

9am - 10am - Recap 
10am - 12:30pm - Non-Molestation and Occupation Orders 
1:30pm - 3:30pm - FHDRA, Direction and Dispute Resolution Appointments 
4pm - 5pm - Divorce 

9am - 10am - Recap
10am - 12:30pm - Writing a Witness and Position Statement 
1:30pm - 4pm - Final Hearing
4pm - 5pm - Mock Cross Examination 

9am - 10am - Recap
10am - 12:30pm - Client Care 
1:30pm - 2:30pm - Basics of Conflict Resolution 
2:30pm - 3:30pm - Fundamentals of Mediation 
3:30pm -  5pm - Recap of whole course

9am - 12:30pm - Running your own Franchise
